Hello Joanne how are you?
The name 'aan het Rot' is still in use.
I checked the phonebook
http://www.nationaletelefoongids.nl/ and I found 17 hits in Zwolle, my hometown.
There is also the site
http://www.meertens.nl/nfd/detail_naam. ... 0aan%20het . But this site is only available in Dutch.
You find the number of people with the name 'aan het Rot' per province of the Census 1947and a explanation of the name 'aan het Rot'
Maybe someone can help your translate the text.
Goodluck with your search.
Kind regards

Hello Joanne
The city of Zwolle, capital of the province of Overijssel, is surrounded by about 16 hamlets such as: Langenholte,Berkum,Wythem,Ittersum,Schelle, Spoolde, Westenholte etc.Spoolde is situeted between Zwolle and the river IJssel. In Spoolde was a small farm, called Het Rot. This farm was sold by mayer Greven and Miss A.M. Greven at November 20 1767 to Mr Gijsbert van Toor Dulmen for F 2600.
Maybe your ancestors once lived on this farm. Many surnames are from the names of the farms, where the people lived on. When they hired or bought another farm, they could change names, before 1811.After that year they had to choose a regular surname, although they could be named with the farmer's name as a nickname after 1811 as well.
Best wishes!

Hello Joanne,
I did find a Geerlig Janssen aan het Rot, father of Mannes aan het Rot, on this page
http://www.historischcentrumoverijssel. ... 1&offset=3 Is he the person you looking for? I also saw him on this page
http://www.genealogieonline.nl/stamboom ... /I3016.php . You can contact A.H. Poelarends on this page, perhaps he has some more information.
If I have some time left this week I will look for you in the Archive. Unfortunaly the archive will be closed for 3 weeks in April.
