Hi:

From the title, I am looking for the parentage and ancestry of Dirk Wesseling. According to his marriage record, Dirk was from Enschede, Overijssel, Netherlands (see here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=293741). I am guessing he was born about 1709 (plus or minus a few years).

Information I have on the family is as follows:

Dirk Wesseling married 23 September 1736 in Haarlem to Bartha Bouwmans (or by variant first and last names). They had the following children, baptized recorded in the Roman Catholic and Dutch Reformed Church registers at Haarlem:

Variant name spellings: Derck, Derk, Dirck, Dirk, Wesseling, Wesselinck, and Wesselinck.

From what I understand, church records in Enschede do not start until the 1720s, so I am unsure where else to look for my ancestor’s baptism. All I have to go on is Dirk was from Enschede, and the birth date I mentioned earlier is a very rough estimate.

I would sincerely welcome any help from anyone with knowledge of this family.

Thanks for the link to the search engine. There were definitely some variants of Wesselinck, Wesseling, etc. Unfortunately, no luck in matching up with any potential candidates.

First, I would like to suggest that people, who don't feel comfortable to respond in english, just respond in dutch. You can easily (google-) translate the respond.

Basicly is says, due to a great fire in may 1862, many or even most churchbooks were lost in that fire.

So, I'm afraid you won't find the baptism date for your ancestor. But it may be possible to find other information. On relatives, for examples.

Did you find the occupation of Dirk Wesseling ? Did he stay in Haarlem, or did he move to elsewhere? Have you found his burial?

Thanks for the reply, as well as the circumstances on the fire. A shame, indeed. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any burial information on Dirk. When I searched the Noord Holland archives, there were a couple of entries for a Dirk Wesseling in Beverwijk (which isn't far from Haarlem), but I am unsure if he is the same person. As best I could decipher, I didn't see an occupation.

Incidentally, my father was from the Netherlands, born in Haarlem in 1930. My cousin Hans lives in Beverwijk.

In the spring of 1981, my late father returned home to visit his mother (my grandmother) who was living in Haarlem at the time. When he had a chance, Dad went to one of the archive centers and he did some preliminary genealogical research.

In 1990, I caught the genealogy bug (so to speak), and started asking questions about my Dutch ancestors. About two years later, cousin Hans began searching the Dutch line for me, and I suspect he ran into the roadblock about Dirk Wesseling. Now I understand why; the church records went up in smoke. It is good to know the historical background so I am not wasting anyone's time.

I have no problem if folks reply in Dutch, so long as everybody understands I cannot speak or write Dutch. (I am only familiar with the basic genealogical terms like vader, moeder, kind, etc.) And yes, I use Google translate a lot; a very helpful tool.

There are a couple of other families who lived in Deventer that I will pose questions about in a separate post.

Dirk Wesselink van Enschede is written, so it may be that he was born elsewhere, I came across the name in Germany in Epe, which is close to Enschede.

Hier is aan de rechterkant genoteerd - in het Latijn - dat Derk niet katholiek is.
Derk is dus protestants gedoopt.

Is het bekend hoe zijn kinderen zich later noemen?

Anna Geertrui Paschen die 2x [nl in 1741 en 1747] doopgetuige is bij de kinderen van Dirk Wesseling komt ook uit Enschede.
Ze is te Amsterdam getrouwd met Gerrit Swam op 28 okt 1712 en ze is de dochter van Hendrik Paschen en Jannetje Wissink
Dit volgens het Twentebestand

en vermoedelijk hertrouwt met Harmanus Blok?
